CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Apple has launched its inaugural foldable device, the iPhone Duo, with starting prices in the U.S. at $1,999. The company announced the new model on Sept. 9 at its Cupertino headquarters, presenting it as part of the latest hardware lineup. Customers in over 70 countries and regions will be able to pre-order starting Oct. 16, with the initial units arriving at stores and customers on Oct. 23.

The iPhone Duo features a book-like design with two Super Retina XDR screens. When closed, a 5.4-inch display handles everyday phone functions. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner screen, ideal for video playback, apps, gaming, and multitasking. Constructed from Grade 5 titanium, the enclosure incorporates a hinge composed of more than 100 parts. Additionally, the device holds an IP68 rating for resistance to splashes, water, and dust.
Apple has customized its mobile software to optimize the larger folding display. The iOS 27.1 operating system pre-installed on the iPhone Duo includes features tailored for the new screen format. Users can place two applications side by side and save preferred app pairings. When opened, the phone can display two Home Screen pages simultaneously. Biometric authentication is available via Touch ID located in the side button, functioning in either configuration.
Foldable screen enhances multitasking and camera capabilities on iPhone
The rear camera system combines a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main camera provides an optical-quality 2x telephoto option and supports zero shutter lag. Before capturing a photo, users can preview selfies taken with the rear camera on the external display. Duo Preview also allows subjects to see the framing while another person manages the camera. The main camera records 4K video at up to 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision.
Powered by Apple’s A20 Pro processor and a dual-battery setup, the foldable iPhone manages heat effectively through a custom vapor chamber during intensive tasks. The device offers up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, which increases to 44 hours when using the outer screen. It supports fast wired and wireless charging, along with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity options.
Pricing options and launch in over 70 markets scheduled for October
The iPhone Duo will be available in storage variants of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Customers can choose from star white or night sky finishes. The device is priced from $1,999 in the United States and AED 8,499 in the UAE. Initial sales begin on Oct. 23, following a week of preorders starting Oct. 16. On Oct. 30, Apple plans to extend availability to an additional 28 countries and regions. Notably, the device will be sold exclusively as an eSIM-only model worldwide.
The iPhone Duo positions Apple within the established foldable smartphone market, featuring a unique hardware and software integration. Its design combines a compact outer screen with the largest display ever on an iPhone. The handset also integrates Apple’s proprietary processors, cameras, connectivity features, and mobile OS into its foldable format. Customers will receive the first units approximately six weeks after the September announcement, with October marking the commercial debut of Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
