Focus is now shifting to the upcoming plug-in solar regulations set to take effect on August 27, 2026. These rules permit approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are limited to a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output and must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation with the local distribution network. Notably, the regulations exclude plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits.
Safety standards regulate plug-in connections
This legislative update revises the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 alongside the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment, requiring a notified body to verify compliance with BS 1363 standards for each plug. While product approval is valid across the UK, the electricity safety amendment specifically covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification outlines requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire safety, labeling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, finding stable operation and no evidence of prolonged unsafe energization or unacceptable thermal effects. The study also identified differences in export control, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These findings contributed to the development of the UK-specific safety standards necessary for legal market entry.
Retailers prepare for approved plug-in products
The government’s consultation process received 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and members of the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, with many also backing the plug-in regulation amendments. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some expressed concerns regarding older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others called for distinctions to be made between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems.
Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are already preparing for the new product category. The new connection method targets households unable to utilize traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. Systems utilizing the new plug-in framework are not legally operable before August 27. From that date onward, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect via a standard household socket. The capacity total for June does not account for systems that will operate under the new plug-in regulations.
