    Austria Experiences Record-Breaking Temperatures in July and Faces €1.4bn in Economic Losses

    WIESELBURG, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria hit its highest temperature ever recorded in July on the 31st when Wieselburg soared to 40.3 degrees Celsius. This figure surpassed the previous July record of 39.7 degrees, which was set in Dellach im Drautal in 1983. GeoSphere Austria verified the new monthly peak amidst a heatwave centered over eastern regions of the nation. The country’s all-time temperature record remains at 40.5 degrees, measured in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in August 2013.

    The milestone in July followed a June characterized by widespread and persistent extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 of its 277 monitored weather stations reported new maximum temperatures for June, with 66 stations recording their highest temperature for any month. Vienna reached 40.0 degrees on June 28, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg hit 40.1 degrees the next day. Several lower-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

    The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimates that the combined socioeconomic impacts from the June and late July heatwaves amount to roughly €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate includes health repercussions, lost productivity, agricultural damage, strain on infrastructure, and increased cooling demands. It also accounts for effects on ecosystems and public services. This figure is not the final government assessment nor a comprehensive insurance loss total, as insurance data only cover damage under active policies.

    Intensity of heatwave surpasses previous Austrian record

    Using area-degree days, which reflect heat intensity, duration, and geographic extent, the Wegener Center evaluated the events. Their analysis indicated around 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave. For the late July event, the estimate ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior benchmark was a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters elevation.

    Corresponding to these extreme temperatures, there was a notable rise in heat-related deaths. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 such fatalities in June 2026, marking the highest June total since the agency started tracking this metric. Heat-related mortality indicates deaths exceeding the expected baseline during periods of unusually high temperatures and does not necessarily mean heat was the sole cause listed on death certificates.

    Deeper rainfall deficits exacerbate drought conditions across Austria

    Following months of unusually dry weather, Austria faced the heatwave with a significant rainfall shortfall. From January 1 to July 27, the country recorded approximately 426 millimeters of rain, well below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for the same period, representing nearly a 30% deficit. Authorities noted that the first seven months of 2026 are the driest comparable period since at least the early 1900s. Regions such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland reported some of the highest rainfall deficits.

    Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and limited precipitation increased evaporation rates during late spring and summer. These conditions lowered soil moisture, putting additional stress on crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies. Climate records show that Austria has experienced more frequent, prolonged, and intense heatwaves over recent decades. Average maximum temperatures during these events have risen by about three degrees from the 1980s to the 2020s. The new July record underscores the ongoing trend of increasing extreme heat in Austria.
