Several lower-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimates that the combined socioeconomic impacts from the June and late July heatwaves amount to roughly €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate includes health repercussions, lost productivity, agricultural damage, strain on infrastructure, and increased cooling demands. It also accounts for effects on ecosystems and public services. This figure is not the final government assessment nor a comprehensive insurance loss total, as insurance data only cover damage under active policies.
Intensity of heatwave surpasses previous Austrian record
Using area-degree days, which reflect heat intensity, duration, and geographic extent, the Wegener Center evaluated the events. Their analysis indicated around 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave. For the late July event, the estimate ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior benchmark was a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters elevation.
Corresponding to these extreme temperatures, there was a notable rise in heat-related deaths. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 such fatalities in June 2026, marking the highest June total since the agency started tracking this metric. Heat-related mortality indicates deaths exceeding the expected baseline during periods of unusually high temperatures and does not necessarily mean heat was the sole cause listed on death certificates.
Deeper rainfall deficits exacerbate drought conditions across Austria
